More experiments

More Sugar

A friend at school told me of a bulk, restaurant supply grocery store, and to my delight, found tubs of “Sirop de Glucose”, just what I needed to further my experiments with candy. I also got a thermometer, a slab of stone and a vintage cast iron fondue pot to help emulate the professionals.

The results have produced joints that are far stronger then I could have imagined. It binds to wood ferociously. And it is completely edible. A bit of mint or berry syrup and they taste good too.

Thesis Departure

For my final masters project I am taking direct inspiration from Richard Brautigan’s short and sweet fictional novel, In Watermelon Sugar . In this fantastical world, the inhabitants craft their world partly from pressed watermelon suger planks. So, for some beginning research, I am investigating whether I can use actual sugar to construct functional objects.

The material, when concocted and handled specifically, behaves exactly like molten glass. Ironically, the main difficulty has been in attempting to find corn syrup here. It is easy to forget that the only country really using this sweetener for everything is the US. It just doesn’t exist in Switzerland.
